Entry recommendations
To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:
- an interest in taking structures apart safely
- a careful attitude to hazards and risk
- good communication skills for working in a team
- an interest in sorting materials for salvage and recycling
What will you learn?
Students learn to work at heights, spot hazards on a demolition site and manage the risks, and use hand tools, small plant and hot work equipment to bring structures down. Much of the work is about what happens after the demolition: sorting materials for salvage, recycling and waste disposal, and storing and handling dangerous goods and hazardous substances correctly. Reading site plans, taking measurements and safe manual handling run through the whole course, and anyone doing construction work in Australia also needs to complete the general construction induction training, commonly called the White Card, before stepping on site. Licensing for demolition work differs between states and territories, so it is worth checking the rules where you intend to work.

Units of competency (11 core, 9 elective)
