Entry recommendations
To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:
- an interest in working with stone and building things
- good hand skills and an eye for detail
- a careful approach to safety on site
- patience for learning traditional craft skills
What will you learn?
You start with the basics that apply to any construction site, such as levelling, setting out, reading plans and working safely at heights, then move onto the craft itself: dressing and moulding stone by hand, splitting and machining it, and cutting letters for headstones and signage. Most people take this on as an apprenticeship, working on heritage restorations, new homes, fireplaces, stairs and kitchen benchtops while they learn. The qualification covers both the traditional hand skills and the tools and machinery used on site today.
