Chief Executive Officer resume template
A clean starting structure with example content grounded in what chief executive officers actually do day to day, not generic filler. Download and replace the bracketed placeholders with your own details.

Which resume format should you use?
Reverse chronological
You have a steady work history. This is the format almost every recruiter and ATS expects by default.
Functional
You're changing fields or have gaps in your employment. Leads with skills rather than a job-by-job timeline.
Combination
You're early career or have worked consistently but for only a few employers. Blends a skills summary with a shorter chronological history.
This template uses the reverse chronological format: the one most chief executive officers should default to, since most Australian recruiters and ATS software expect it.
Professional summary
Chief Executive Officer with a track record of setting strategic direction, leading executive teams and reporting financial performance to boards and shareholders. Experienced balancing long-term vision with the operational discipline needed to manage risk, capital allocation and stakeholder relationships. Comfortable sitting as the final point of accountability for organisational performance and culture.
Key skills
- Strategy development
- Financial analysis and modelling
- Risk and internal controls
- Project management
- People leadership
- Stakeholder management
- ERP systems (SAP, Oracle)
- Business intelligence dashboards (Tableau, Power BI)
- Board management software (Diligent, Boardvantage)
- Financial forecasting tools
Experience: example bullet points
- Developed and communicated a multi-year strategic plan to the board, aligning capital allocation with market conditions and organisational mission
- Led the executive team through a period of restructure, improving cross-functional decision-making and shortening time to market for new initiatives
- Oversaw financial performance and capital allocation, reporting monthly on P&L, cash flow and forecast variance to the board and major shareholders
- Built and maintained relationships with investors, key customers and strategic partners, securing renewed funding and contract commitments
- Identified an emerging market risk ahead of a sector downturn and repositioned strategy in response, protecting margin while competitors scaled back
Education
Typically a bachelor degree in business, commerce, law or a related field, often followed by an MBA or other postgraduate qualification; many CEOs reach the role through progressive senior management and operational experience rather than a single formal pathway, and completing an Australian Institute of Company Directors course is common preparation for board-facing work.
Keywords an ATS is likely to scan for
Applicant tracking systems match your resume against terms in the job ad before a person ever sees it. Only include the ones that actually apply to your experience, but if a term below matches something you've done, use the same wording the job ad uses.
- ASX
- ASIC
- AICD
- Corporations Act 2001
- board governance
- P&L management
- EBITDA
- stakeholder engagement
- risk management framework
- ERP
- Tableau
- Power BI
- strategic planning
- executive leadership
- WHS compliance
- capital allocation
Getting past ATS screening
- Match the specific skills, certifications and terms used in the job ad, not just your own wording for the same thing.
- Keep formatting simple: no tables, text boxes, columns, headers/footers or graphics. Parsers frequently drop content placed in these.
- Submit as .docx or PDF unless the job ad specifies otherwise.
- Use standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills) rather than creative alternatives.
- List your core skills and technical competencies in their own section so a keyword scan can find them instantly.
This is a starting point, not a guarantee of interviews. Tailor every bullet point to your own real experience and the specific job ad.
