Financial Planner resume template preview: an Australian example with a professional summary, key skills, experience bullet points and education sections filled in

Which resume format should you use?

Reverse chronological

You have a steady work history. This is the format almost every recruiter and ATS expects by default.

Functional

You're changing fields or have gaps in your employment. Leads with skills rather than a job-by-job timeline.

Combination

You're early career or have worked consistently but for only a few employers. Blends a skills summary with a shorter chronological history.

This template uses the reverse chronological format: the one most financial planners should default to, since most Australian recruiters and ATS software expect it.

Professional summary

Comfortable working within FASEA and ASIC compliance requirements while keeping advice grounded in each client's actual goals and risk tolerance. Known for clear, jargon-free communication with clients and thorough documentation.

  • Regulatory compliance (FASEA, ASIC, Corporations Act)
  • Financial analysis and modelling
  • Statement of Advice preparation

  • Excel
  • Client relationship management

Experience: example bullet points

  • Assessed client goals, assets and risk profiles to build tailored strategies spanning superannuation, investment and insurance
  • Prepared Statements of Advice compliant with the Corporations Act and best interests duty, keeping documentation audit-ready
  • Advised clients on super contribution strategies, portfolio structure and insurance cover, adjusting recommendations as circumstances changed
  • Reviewed client portfolios against shifting market conditions and life events, rebalancing strategies where needed
  • Managed a client book through regular review cycles, maintaining strong retention through proactive contact rather than reactive fixes
  • Worked within firm and regulator disclosure standards across every client file, with no adverse compliance findings

Education

Bachelor degree in financial planning, commerce or business (finance major) is the most common path, followed by the FASEA-set financial adviser exam and a professional year; some planners add postgraduate study such as a Master of Financial Planning or CFP certification.

Keywords an ATS is likely to scan for

Applicant tracking systems match your resume against terms in the job ad before a person ever sees it. Only include the ones that actually apply to your experience, but if a term below matches something you've done, use the same wording the job ad uses.

Getting past ATS screening

This is a starting point, not a guarantee of interviews. Tailor every bullet point to your own real experience and the specific job ad.
