How to structure it

Opening

Name the role and, in one line, the strongest reason you're a fit. Skip the throat-clearing.

Middle

One or two paragraphs of real, specific evidence: what you did, and the result. This is where most letters go generic. Yours shouldn't.

Why this employer

One genuine, specific reason you want this job at this company, not any company. Vague enthusiasm reads as a template that wasn't customised.

Re: Application for Geologist

I'm writing to apply for the Geologist position at [Company Name]. My background combines field sampling, subsurface data interpretation and hazard assessment work, which lines up closely with the technical and reporting demands of this role.

In a recent project, I worked through inconsistencies between historical well log data and new drill results, rebuilding part of the geological model in Leapfrog Geo to reflect what the fresh data actually showed. The revised model changed the recommended drilling sequence and was picked up by the wider technical team without further rework, which told me the interpretation held up under scrutiny.

[add one genuine, specific reason: a project, value, or market position you can point to] is what draws me to [Company Name] specifically, beyond the role itself.

Thank you for considering my application. I've attached my resume, which sets out my field, laboratory and reporting experience in more detail, and I'd welcome the chance to discuss how it fits your team.

Getting it right

This is a starting point, not a guarantee of interviews. Make it specific to the actual employer before you send it.
