Entry requirements

Entrants to this qualification must possess the minimum entry requirements determined by CASA for ATC licensing purposes or Defence Air Traffic Controller entry standards.

Entry recommendations

To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:

  • an interest in aviation and how airspace works
  • clear spoken communication skills
  • the ability to hold a mental picture of moving traffic
  • a calm approach when things go wrong

What will you learn?

You learn to talk to pilots using standard radiotelephony, hold a mental picture of where every aircraft is, sequence and separate traffic, and run search and rescue alerting and emergency responses when something goes wrong. Human performance gets real attention as well, since the job depends on staying alert and working closely with a team across shifts that rarely slow down. Licensing sits outside the course: after training, civilian controllers apply to CASA for certification.
