BAS agents work out what a business owes or can claim back on GST, PAYG withholding and other obligations, then lodge the statement with the ATO on the client's behalf. They review transaction records against GST rules, sort out discrepancies before they turn into ATO queries, and explain the numbers to clients who often have no accounting background. Most work inside a bookkeeping or accounting practice, though many run their own registered practice once they hold BAS agent registration with the Tax Practitioners Board, which is what separates the role from a general bookkeeper.

How much do bas agents earn?

The median full-time salary for a bas agent is $72,800 per annum, before tax, up $15,300 since 2018.

Pay follows registration status and experience more than the work itself: an agent who is registered and signs off on lodgements can charge clients directly, while an assistant still working under someone else's registration earns less. The size of the practice, the mix of clients and how much of the work is done part time all shift the annual figure. Agents who build their own client base and eventually run a practice set their own fees, which is where earnings change most.

How do you become a bas agent?

Here's the path most bas agents take, step by step.

  1. 1
Complete a qualification that covers bookkeeping and GST

The Tax Practitioners Board expects a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping (FNS40222), or an equivalent qualification, plus a unit in GST and BAS law. An accounting degree also meets the qualification requirement, and some agents come in that way instead.

  2. 2
Build relevant experience under a registered agent

Registration requires a set number of hours of relevant work in the past few years, close to a year of full-time practice. Most people get those hours as a bookkeeper or accounts officer inside a practice, where a registered agent can check their work and sign off on what they lodge.

  3. 3
Apply to the Tax Practitioners Board for registration

The application asks for evidence of your qualification and experience, a police check, and details of any past insolvency or disciplinary matters. Registered agents appear on a public register, so clients can check your status before they engage you.

  4. 4
    Keep the registration current

Registration is renewed on a cycle and requires continuing professional development each period, along with keeping up with ATO changes. Once it lapses you can no longer charge a fee for BAS work, so renewal dates are worth diarising.

  5. 5
Decide what shape your practice takes

Some agents stay inside a firm and take on more complex clients, while others build their own client list and register a practice of their own. Working independently means your own professional indemnity insurance, software subscriptions and client records to manage.

What's it like being a bas agent?

The job runs on the quarterly lodgement cycle. In the weeks before each due date it is records, reconciliations and checking, and in between it is quieter, with time for tidying ledgers and answering client questions. Agents who enjoy it tend to like getting the detail right and explaining a set of rules to someone who does not speak accounting, and they are comfortable being the person who signs off.

What people like

  • You see how the business actually runs. A statement captures a quarter of a client's trading, so you learn how a cafe, a trade business or a consultancy earns its money, not just how it files.
  • Clients understand what you have done for them. Explaining why a figure moved, in plain language, is a large part of the job and often the reason clients stay with an agent.
  • The cycle sets a predictable rhythm. Every quarter follows the same pattern of chasing records, checking and lodging, so the heavy weeks are known in advance and can be planned around.
  • Your own practice is within reach. Registration lets you take on clients directly, so agents who want to work for themselves can build a client list gradually while still employed.

What people find hard

  • The pressure lands in the same few weeks each quarter. Deadlines sit a short time after each quarter ends, so those stretches are far heavier than the rest of the calendar.
  • Chasing clients for their records. Nothing can be lodged until the paperwork arrives, and some clients are slow, which squeezes the same work into a shorter window.
  • The mistakes carry your name. When a statement is wrong, the ATO looks at who prepared and signed it, so accuracy matters more than finishing quickly.
  • Much of the work repeats. Coding transactions and checking bank feeds is similar from one client to the next, and the same handful of problems come up again and again.

Will AI replace bas agents?

This is a moderately exposed job. Accounting software and bank feeds now handle the routine coding, categorising and arithmetic that once filled a BAS agent's week, and the ATO's online services do more of the checking. What holds the exposure down is the registration itself: a person has to sign the statement, judge what can be claimed and answer for it afterwards.

Common questions about becoming a bas agent

Straight answers to the questions people ask most.

How much do BAS agents earn?

The median full-time BAS agent earns $72,800 per annum, before tax, which means half earn more than that and half earn less. Registration, experience and the complexity of the clients you handle move the figure most, and agents running their own practice set their own fees.

How do you become a BAS agent?

You need to meet the Tax Practitioners Board's registration requirements, which means a qualification such as the Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping (FNS40222) with a GST and BAS law unit, plus relevant experience, and then an application that includes a police check. Most people build the experience as a bookkeeper or accounts officer before they register, so the study and the practical work usually overlap.

Are BAS agents in demand?

BAS agents are currently not in shortage. Employment is projected to grow 5.9% over the decade to 2035, with small businesses that outsource their GST and payroll reporting rather than hiring in-house making up much of the work. For someone entering the field, holding registration matters more than the overall numbers, because only registered agents can charge for BAS services.

Will AI replace BAS agents?

Accounting software already reads bank feeds, suggests categories and calculates the GST, and that has absorbed much of the routine coding. What it has not replaced is the registration: a person has to sign the statement, judge whether a claim is valid and answer the ATO when it asks questions. Agents who shift towards advice and more complex clients are the least exposed.

What can a BAS agent move into?

Tax agent work pays $20,800 more and builds directly on the activity statements you already lodge, though it needs broader tax study and its own registration. Accountant roles use the same compliance background and pay $31,400 more, while payroll officer work pays $10,700 more. Running your own registered practice is the other common path, and it is often where earnings grow, because you set your own fees.

Do you need a degree to be a BAS agent?

No. The usual route is a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping with a GST and BAS law unit, which many people complete while working in a practice. An accounting degree also satisfies the qualification requirement, and some agents enter that way.
