Which resume format should you use?
Reverse chronological
You have a steady work history. This is the format almost every recruiter and ATS expects by default.
Functional
You're changing fields or have gaps in your employment. Leads with skills rather than a job-by-job timeline.
Combination
You're early career or have worked consistently but for only a few employers. Blends a skills summary with a shorter chronological history.
This template uses the reverse chronological format: the one most education reviewers should default to, since most Australian recruiters and ATS software expect it.

Experience: example bullet points
- Reviewed curriculum and assessment documentation for a cluster of training providers against the Standards for RTOs, producing evaluation reports that providers used to revise their tools before the next audit cycle.
- Observed teaching across more than 30 classrooms in a single review cycle, recording evidence against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and feeding findings into school improvement plans.
- Analysed NAPLAN and internal assessment data in Excel to test whether a provider's reported outcomes matched the underlying cohort data, and documented the gaps for the review panel.
- Ran focus groups with staff and students using Qualtrics and coded the responses in NVivo, which gave the written findings a student voice rather than a purely documentary basis.
- Briefed principals and chief executives on draft findings before final reports were issued, reducing the number of recommendations disputed and sent back for revision.
- Advised providers on accreditation and continuous improvement, including coaching two organisations through the evidence requirements for their first full quality review.
Education
A teaching degree or Bachelor of Education plus a postgraduate qualification in education, assessment or public policy (a Master of Education is common), with current registration through the relevant state or territory teacher authority and demonstrated experience in schools, RTOs or higher education.

Getting past ATS screening
- Match the specific skills, certifications and terms used in the job ad, not just your own wording for the same thing.
- Keep formatting simple: no tables, text boxes, columns, headers/footers or graphics. Parsers frequently drop content placed in these.
- Submit as .docx or PDF unless the job ad specifies otherwise.
- Use standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills) rather than creative alternatives.
- List your core skills and technical competencies in their own section so a keyword scan can find them instantly.
This is a starting point, not a guarantee of interviews. Tailor every bullet point to your own real experience and the specific job ad.
