Which resume format should you use?
Reverse chronological
You have a steady work history. This is the format almost every recruiter and ATS expects by default.
Functional
You're changing fields or have gaps in your employment. Leads with skills rather than a job-by-job timeline.
Combination
You're early career or have worked consistently but for only a few employers. Blends a skills summary with a shorter chronological history.
This template uses the reverse chronological format: the one most legal practice managers should default to, since most Australian recruiters and ATS software expect it.

Legal Practice Manager with a background in legal administration and business operations, responsible for the financial, staffing and compliance functions of a fee-earning practice. Keeps trust accounting accurate, budgets and reporting on track, and support teams running smoothly so principals and lawyers can stay on client work. Comfortable moving between the trust ledger, a practice management system and a difficult conversation with a partner about write-offs.

Experience: example bullet points
- Reconcile the firm's trust account each month against bank records and ledger balances, preparing the supporting statements and reconciling within the statutory timeframe set by the relevant law society.
- Reviewed intake and file opening in Actionstep, cutting the turnaround from first enquiry to signed engagement letter from four days to same day.
- Supervise a team of nine administrative and paralegal staff, covering recruitment, rostering and performance reviews across two office locations.
- Prepare the annual budget and monthly management reports for a multi-partner practice, tracking work in progress, debtor days and fee earner utilisation.
- Reworked the billing and matter closing workflow in LEAP and Xero so unbilled work and write-offs are caught before month end rather than after.
- Maintain the compliance register covering practising certificates, professional indemnity insurance and trust account obligations, keeping records inspection-ready and resolving discrepancies with the principal before they escalate.
Education
Typically a Diploma of Legal Services or a Bachelor of Business (management or accounting major), or a recognised legal practice management short course, combined with several years in legal administration or a law firm operations role.

Getting past ATS screening
- Match the specific skills, certifications and terms used in the job ad, not just your own wording for the same thing.
- Keep formatting simple: no tables, text boxes, columns, headers/footers or graphics. Parsers frequently drop content placed in these.
- Submit as .docx or PDF unless the job ad specifies otherwise.
- Use standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills) rather than creative alternatives.
- List your core skills and technical competencies in their own section so a keyword scan can find them instantly.
This is a starting point, not a guarantee of interviews. Tailor every bullet point to your own real experience and the specific job ad.
