A scrum master works inside a software delivery team, usually a group of five to nine people, running the standups, sprint planning and retrospectives that keep the sprint cycle moving and clearing the blockers a developer can't remove alone, such as an access request or a dependency on another team's release. The role is often confused with project management, but a scrum master doesn't assign tasks, set deadlines or hold the budget: the team decides what it can deliver, and the scrum master protects the process that lets it decide well. Most are employed by software companies, digital agencies, consultancies and larger organisations partway through an Agile transformation, and a good number work on contract for the length of a program.

How much do scrum masters earn?

The median full-time salary for a scrum master is $111,800 per annum, before tax, up $23,700 since 2018.

What you earn depends heavily on how you are engaged. Contract and consulting work usually brings a higher day rate than a permanent role inside a product team, though it comes without paid leave or the same notice. Certification matters most when you are starting out, and after a few years employers pay for the teams you have turned around and the industries you have worked in, since each sets its own bands.

What does a scrum master do day to day?

The list below is what fills most weeks; the exact mix shifts with seniority and whatever stage the current work is at.

  • Facilitating the daily standup, sprint planning, review and retrospective, and keeping each one to its purpose rather than letting it drift
  • Coaching the product owner on how to shape and order a backlog, and coaching developers on why the process works the way it does
  • Clearing the blockers one person can't shift alone, like an access request sitting with IT or a dependency on another team's release
  • Reading velocity and burndown charts closely enough to tell leadership what is really slowing delivery
  • Working the team toward managing its own process, which means a good scrum master becomes less central over time

What skills do scrum masters need?

Is the job growing?

About 12,500 people work as scrum masters in Australia, and employment is projected to grow 18% over the decade to 2035. That's healthy, above-average growth, and the role should stay in solid demand.

How do you become a scrum master?

Here's the path most scrum masters take, step by step.

  1. 1
Get inside a delivery team first

Most scrum masters move across from a role in the same team, such as testing, business analysis, project administration or development, so they learn how the work actually flows before they start facilitating it.

  2. 2
Learn the Scrum framework and take a recognised certification

Scrum Alliance's CSM and Scrum.org's PSM I are common entry certificates, earned through a short course or an online exam. Certification helps you past an initial screen, but on its own it rarely wins the job.

  3. 3
Practise facilitation before you hold the title

Offer to run standups or retrospectives for your current team, or take on the scrum master duties for a small internal project, because interviews turn on meetings you have run and conflicts you have handled.

  4. 4
Apply for junior, associate or contract scrum master roles

Consultancies and larger organisations partway through an Agile transformation are where these openings appear most often, and some offer paid training or mentoring on the way in.

  5. 5
    Broaden beyond one framework

Kanban, scaled Agile and team coaching skills widen the roles you can take, particularly in organisations running several teams under one delivery model.

Whether you're working toward becoming a scrum master or already are one and want a hand with the next step (sharpening your resume for ATS screening, tightening your cover letter, or knowing what you'll actually be asked at interview), here are examples grounded in this specific role, not generic templates.

What's it like being a scrum master?

The work runs on a short cycle: a two-week sprint, daily standups, a review and a retrospective before it starts again. Much of it is conversation rather than writing code or managing a budget, and the pressure comes from persuading people you have no authority over, from a product owner who keeps changing priorities to a manager who wants a firm date. It suits someone who enjoys watching a group work better together and can stay patient when the same problem reappears.

What people like

  • Watching a stuck team start moving. A sprint where the team clears its own blockers and finishes what it planned is the clearest sign the coaching is working.
  • Influence without a management title. You shape how a team works and how priorities get set without owning anyone's performance review or budget.
  • A visible rhythm to the work. Sprints give the job a natural start and finish, so progress is easier to see than in roles where a project runs for a year.
  • Room to change industries. The framework works much the same in banking, health, government and media, which makes moving sectors easier than in many IT roles.

What people find hard

  • Responsibility without authority. You are accountable for how the team works, but you cannot assign the work or overrule a product owner who changes priorities mid-sprint.
  • The same problems returning. Teams slip back into old habits under deadline pressure, so much of the job is having one conversation until it sticks.
  • Meeting-heavy weeks. Standups, planning, refinement, review and retrospective can fill a sprint with ceremonies, leaving little uninterrupted time.
  • The role can look like overhead. When budgets tighten, teams that already run well are the first to be asked whether they still need a dedicated scrum master.

Will AI replace scrum masters?

Exposure here is moderate: the reporting and backlog administration parts of the job are already being automated, while the facilitation and coaching that hold a team together are not. Tools built into Jira and Azure DevOps increasingly generate dashboards, meeting summaries and draft backlog items, which removes some administrative load but does not change who has to get a group of people to agree. Expect the role to move further toward coaching and further from status reporting.

Common questions about becoming a scrum master

Straight answers to the questions people ask most.

How much does a scrum master earn in Australia?

The median for full-time scrum masters is $111,800 per year before tax. It covers a wide range, because contract work on a transformation program often pays more than a permanent role in a product team, and experience in coaching or scaled Agile adds to it. Treat the figure as a midpoint rather than a starting salary.

How do you become a scrum master?

Most people get there from inside a delivery team, moving across from testing, business analysis, project coordination or development. A recognised certification such as CSM or PSM I helps you get shortlisted, and hands-on facilitation, even of your own team's standups, is what interviewers probe. Employers usually want you to have worked somewhere the framework was already running, rather than expected to introduce it.

Is there demand for scrum masters?

Scrum masters are currently in shortage in metropolitan areas, and employment is projected to grow 18% over the decade to 2035. Much of that demand sits with larger organisations running multi-team Agile programs and with the consultancies that staff them. If you are entering the field, experience facilitating a real team will count for more than another certificate.

Will AI replace scrum masters?

The administrative side of the role is already being automated: meeting notes, status summaries, burndown charts and draft backlog items can be generated from what is already in Jira or Azure DevOps. The parts that hold a team together, noticing that a quiet developer is stuck, negotiating priorities with a product owner and getting a group to agree on what went wrong in a sprint, stay with the person. Expect the role to shift further toward coaching and away from reporting.

What can a scrum master move into?

Delivery planning and stakeholder facilitation carry across to IT project management, where pay is $60,300 more and the work adds governance, budgets and formal schedules. Those same skills translate into change management or organisational development consulting, where the focus shifts from software delivery to how people and teams adopt new ways of working. Some experienced scrum masters set up an independent Agile coaching or consulting practice, which is often where earnings grow, though the work is less steady than a permanent role.

Do you need a degree to become a scrum master?

No, there is no formal degree requirement, and the workforce is mixed: around 38% of scrum masters hold a bachelor degree, with diplomas and certificates making up much of the rest. Employers look for evidence that you have run a team's process, which usually comes from a related job rather than the qualification itself. A diploma in IT or business can be enough when you can point to that experience.
